Implementing Integrated STEM in Virginia Elementary and Middle School Classrooms
Introductory Systems and Control Activities for Beginners
Old Dominion University
Norfolk Virginia

lynn.basham@doe.virginia.gov

Time-efficient, cost-effective, and age‐appropriate approaches will be used in the Systems and Control workshop and initiative. Past experience indicates that these approaches help teachers provide student with engaging, low-ˇthreshold (easy) activities while also providing students with meaningful, high-ceiling (demanding) activities that integrate and extend STEM knowledge and skills.

The workshop will use Teacher Geek, a simple and powerful construction system, and Crumble, a low-cost, easy to use programmable controller to create the following activities:

  • Fairground/Carnival project (start/stop rides, controlling ride speed, ride safety)

  • Model Theater project that will control lighting (on/off, mood and color lighting); curtains (open/close, curtain speed); and moving backdr

  • Textile project (safety clothing, biking safety shirt0

  • Buggy/People Mover project (forward, reverse, turn, line tracking)

  • Biotechnology/ Agriculture (monitoring and controlling water and heat in a greenhouse)
