ITEEA STEM Professional Development Webinar Series
NASA Spotlites – Science and Engineering by Students for Students

Presenter: Joan Harper-Neely, STEM Educational Specialist for NIA-CISE

ITEEA Professional Development Webinar Series Kicks off New School Year on August 16, 2018

Join this professional development webinar session with Joan Harper-Neely, the STEM Educational Specialist at the Center for Integrative STEM Education (CISE) at the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA). Learn how to engage students in a problem-based activity that results in students producing NASA Spotlite videos. This webinar series is FREE to ITEEA members. The fee for nonmembers is $45. You must be logged in to see member pricing.

What's a NASA Spotlite video? These 90- to 120-second videos are written, filmed, edited, and produced by students (Grades 3-12) as they think through an engineering design process. Each video targets a science misconception. All the steps that students need to know in creating a Spotlite video can be accomplished using cell phones, tablets, and laptops. The NASA Spotlite design task increases STEM literacy for BOTH student producers and the end-product student users. Find out how to bring this authentic design challenge to your classroom.

Joan Harper-Neely is a STEM educational specialist for the Center for Integrative STEM Education (CISE) at the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA). She has spent 8 of her 25 years in public education as a children’s engineering and technology teacher for an elementary school. Her most notable recognition is ITEEA Elementary Technology Teacher of the Year for the state of Virginia!
