Preconference Workshops

  • Conf - 2022 - Micro KartRacing Through STEM: Design Thinking with the Build Smart EV Micro-Kart Kit (12:00pm-4:00pm) Racing Through STEM: Teaching Mechanics, Electronics, and Coding with the Build Smart EV Micro-Kart workshop will provide educators with the unique opportunity to build their own working scale model go kart. After constructing the kart chassis, participants will install mechanical components like wheels, axles, and pullies, learning about pully ratios and their impact on torque and speed performance along the way. They will then install several electronic components onto their chassis (like a motor, breadboard, resistor, transistor, potentiometer, and LEDs) with the end goal of creating headlights, taillights, and a variable-speed motor for their karts. Finally, participants will incorporate and use a micro:bit microcontroller to control the actions of their light and motor systems via block coding. They will leave not only with a fully functioning Micro-Kart, but also resources and ideas for immediate classroom application. Includes four-hour workshop, micro-kart kit, and access to online curriculum. $145.00. Preregistration required.
  • News - Sept21 - OnShapeHigh School EbD™ (Grades 9-12): PTC Onshape Associates Certification Course (12:30pm-4:30pm) Throughout the course of the year, the Onshape Associates Certification Course can be used as a course taught throughout the course of 18 weeks or as a supplemental resource for instruction taught directly for Onshape. At the end of the course, students take the certification exam for Onshape (red callout in Figure 1 at the bottom accessible by this LINK). To encourage more students to work toward a selected industry credential while in high school, the Engineering byDesign™ Industry Certification Pathway was developed by ITEEA’s STEM Center for Teaching and Learning. By following the suggested pathway delineated in this document, educators can prepare students for a successful attempt at an industry certification through Onshape for the Associates Certification Exam. The Engineering byDesign™ Industry Certification Pathway includes the following courses: Foundations of Technology, Technological Design, and Engineering Design. Also, a stand-alone Onshape Associate Certificaton Course will be offered. This course can be utilized in any classroom to strengthen Onshape currently being taught in classes or serve as a course to be taught in its entirety as a standard Computer Aided Design course. Included in this LINK are infographics that provide visual representations of the Engineering byDesign™ (EbD) three-year course sequences (p. 2). Includes the cost of consumable supplies, delivery of instruction, one month of coursework enrollment, and hands-on products. Registration deadline is February 16, 2022. $195.00. Preregistration required.
  • Building an Elementary STEM Program  (1:30pm-4:30pm) Integrated STEM is a powerful way to engage students in critical thinking and problem solving learning experiences that build transferable skills. With a seemingly endless supply of resources and opinions online, it can be hard to know where to start. This workshop focuses on sharing proven strategies and effective resources to implement STEM in elementary school and to build a sustainable STEM program. $55.00. Preregistration required.
