ITEEA represents more than 35,000 K-12 technology and engineering educators throughout the U.S. and internationally. This includes classroom teachers, developers, administrators, and university personnel in the field representing all levels of education. Mrs. Hobbie has been teaching art for 22 years. Mrs. Hobbie’s classroom is a Technology & Engineering rich environment. As An Art Teacher she was naturally drawn to the Engineering & Design process, yet she also takes every opportunity to assist her students to discover the technology involved in the tools and processes used in her area of specialty. Mrs. Hobbie reinforces her belief that “there is an importance for children to understand the problem solving process. Through technology, Children’s Engineering and through art, people find innovation.” Mrs. Hobbie is a graduate of Longwood University (1991) with a BA in Graphic Design and BFA in Art Education. She is also a Clinical Faculty Member of VCU and works closely with VCU to train future teachers. Mrs. Hobbie’s art students have been in several shows in the state of Virginia and one of her students won a national paper engineering contest. Mrs. Hobbie offers a variety of experiences using the Children’s Engineering Design Loop. Through the years, her encouragement has help children develop problem solving skills and to become risk takers willing to try new approaches to problems. Mrs. Hobbie has also trained fellow teachers in her school, in Chesterfield County In- Service, Virginia Art Education Association Conferences, Virginia Children’s Engineering Conferences, and ITEEA Conferences(since 2010). In the future, Mrs. Hobbie looks forward to continuing and encouraging others to incorporate Technology and Engineering into their curriculum.
