ViaSat

ViaSat is in the business to connect the world. As a global broadband services and technology company, we are connecting international communities to the internet by offering residential internet service; enabling passengers and operations crews to stream high-bandwidth media, applications, and content when traveling globally on commercial, business, or government aircraft and maritime vessels; and empowering international warfighters on the front lines of battle with real-time, secure internet-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance for high-requirement missions. We deliver and protect information—when and where it is needed most— with our trusted communications ground systems, infrastructure, and services.

Our more than 3,700 global team members are dedicated to doing what others in the industry view as impossible. We imagined and launched the world’s highest-capacity communications satellite and continue to set the standard in developing technologies that address global broadband challenges and ensure a better way for consumers, businesses, governments, and military personnel to stay connected. We think big, we act intelligently, and we’re not done…we’re just beginning. During the Educational Field Trip, participants will visit the ViaSat in Duluth, GA, home to the Commercial Networks and Antenna Systems division. While on the ViaSat campus you will see the entire design cycle of a large antenna system that includes the design, CAD, assembly, and testing of the system.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium Engineering and Behind the Scenes

The new Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United FC and will be host to the College Football Championship in 2018. Home to the largest LED video display in all of sports, this never-been-done-before, 360-degree halo display is a groundbreaking engineering innovation installed above the field as part of the stadium’s unique retractable roof structure. A large, first-of-its-kind mega column LED display stretches 101 feet from the first concourse level to the roof. Altogether, Daktronics has installed more than 82,500 square feet of video displays at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The stadium’s roof is made up of 27,500 tons of steel, 3,500 of which make up the roof petals. Each petal moves independently of the others, but all move simultaneously, which creates the optical illusion camera lens-like effect when it opens and closes.

  • The stadium roof may appear to rotate open but it’s an optical illusion—the roof opens by the movement of eight “petals” that slide open in a straight line.
  • Each of the moving petals cantilever approximately 200 feet inwards towards the center of the stadium and provide a roof covering when the petals are in the closed position.
  • The moveable petal structures are powered by eight mechanized “bogies,” which drive the petals along an inner rail and are attached to the outer uplift rail by six roller mechanisms
  • In the closed position, the petals lock together to form a watertight seal. Each petal structure is clad with air-inflated ETFE pillows. ETFE is a highly durable, lightweight fabric that is translucent, allowing for a light-filled stadium, even when moveable petals are in the closed position.

Minimum: 15 people; Maximum: 50 people (25 per group) $50 – ticket required
