Jeff Weld, Ph.D.

"THE U.S. FEDERAL STEM EDUCATION STRATEGIC PLAN: NORTH STAR"

The American STEM education community has spoken with one voice in shaping the Federal STEM Education Five-Year Strategic Plan for 2018 to 2023 (and beyond). Consensus goals and pathways help everyone row the STEM boat in the same direction, assuring that the coming decade of our Nation’s STEM movement will be maximally impactful and culturally transformative.

Jeff Weld is Senior Policy Advisor and Assistant Director for STEM Education at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, on leave from the post of Executive Director for the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council. At OSTP, Jeff’s primary responsibility is to lead the production of a Federal Five-Year STEM Education Strategic Plan. Under his directorship, Iowa showed annual gains in test scores, elective enrollments, post-secondary enrollments, and public support, in STEM education. The Triangle Coalition for STEM recognized Jeff in 2014 with their STEM Champion Award. In 2013 his alma mater the University of Iowa bestowed upon Weld their Alumni of Distinction Honor by the College of Education. As a faculty member at Oklahoma State University and currently the University of Northern Iowa, Jeff secured $5.6 million in grants, published scores of research articles, essays, chapters and two books, the latest Creating a STEM Culture for Teaching and Learning, (NSTA Press, 2017). A decorated former teacher and professor, Jeff was the 2007 national collegiate biology teacher of the year.
