An effective engineering curriculum provides great potential for middle and high school STEM teaching and learning. This is because an authentic engineering practice embodies the practical application of science, technology and math to solve a meaningful problem. Engineering is STEM, and if delivered effectively, students will find meaning in complementary disciplines and ultimately acquire the confidence and motivation to pursue a career in STEM. But there’s a problem. A truly authentic engineering practice is inherently iterative–highly iterative–and teachers and students struggle to find the time or money for the level of iteration that yields deep and meaningful levels of learning.

We invite you to hear one teacher’s solution to this problem. It is a story of how the process of informed iteration transformed her teaching and her students’ learning through a set of robust virtual learning applications that are coupled with robust hands-on construction. This powerful turn-key STEM experience, called WhiteBox Learning, dynamically puts the “E in STEM.”

Michelle Shafer is a degreed engineer with fourteen years teaching experience in high school science. She also holds a Masters of Education. Michelle has served as her department chair for 9 years trying to bring innovative curriculum to her school. She has spent most of her career studying how to effectively administer STEM curriculum to students. Michelle was published in the Journal of STEM Education, Impact of Engineering Case Study in a High School Pre-Engineering Course. She has been using Whitebox Learning in her classroom for the past 6 years.
