Assistant Professor - Applied Technology
Position Description: The Department of Applied Technology is seeking a 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor of Applied Technology.
Instruction (70%): The successful candidate will teach a variety of Industrial Technology and Technology Education courses. Specifically a TECS 130 STEM in Technology Systems class and other course work pertaining to design, construction, and manufacturing. An emphasis will be placed on blending science, technology, applied engineering, and mathematical concepts into entry-level, applied, industrial courses. The department has a strong technology and engineering-education program and is looking to expand upon an elementary-STEM course offering. The candidate will also teach a general education class of IDS 390 Technology in Society. The teaching load is 12 credit hours for both fall and spring semesters with a possible summer course overload. Teaching opportunities include theoretical and applied coursework, on-campus and through distance-education platforms. Participation in curriculum development, professional organizations, undergraduate advising, and activities within the department are required. Service (20%): The successful candidate will be expected to serve on department and university committees. They will also participate in other appropriate department, college, university, community, and professional service activities. Scholarship (10%): The successful candidate will be expected to develop a program of scholarly pursuit in their discipline area with preference for topics of local and regional applied-technology interest.
Master’s degree with teaching background in a public-education setting in the United States or comparable industry experience. Candidates with a B.S. degree in the preferred discipline and a Master’s in Education or comparable will also be considered for this position. The terminal degree in the Department of Applied Technology is a Master’s plus 10 years of experience in education and/or industry or an earned doctoral degree. The candidate must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work well with students and department faculty and staff.
Master’s degree in Industrial Technology, Technology Education, Engineering Technology, or a related area. College or university-level teaching is preferred. Experience in an industrial setting and/or secondary teaching is highly desirable. A working knowledge of the following software and equipment is needed for class functionality: Autodesk (AutoCad and Inventor), Aspire/Vcarve, Laser cutting, CNC routers, and 3D printing. Candidates are expected to be able to operate and maintain a general industrial lab facility. The FHSU Center for Applied Technology is home to course work in CAD, construction, graphics communication, metallurgy, plastics, robotics, and woodworking. Familiarity with these types of labs are important in the selection process. Experience supervising student organizations is also desirable.
Rank: The department is seeking to hire a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Applied Technology. Candidates without the terminal degree requirements may be hired at a lower rank. Degree and experience will determine first appointment rank.

The Department of Applied Technology has seven full-time faculty positions, 200 undergraduate majors, and offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Studies, Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Leadership, and an Associate of Applied Science in Technology and Leadership (Industrial Technology). Students who select Applied Technology as a major pursue program concentrations in technology and engineering education, engineering-design technology, construction technology, construction management, manufacturing technology, and technology leadership. About the College:
The college was formed in 2015 by aggregating the departments of Agriculture, Applied Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The academic units consist of approximately 70 full-time faculty, 1700 undergraduate majors, and 50 graduate students. STM departments also make significant contributions to the university’s General Education program, coursework support for the other four colleges, and to the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science, which is an early-college program for high-achieving high school students.
