21st Century Leadership Academy – DC Experience 2019

October 28, 2019

The 21st Century Leadership Academy has been facilitating the professional development of early career Engineering and Technology Education professionals since its inception in 2006. During those years, 81 participants have benefited from the program with it’s monthly online sessions, leadership workshops at annual conferences, and annual two and one-half day experience in Washington, DC.

The class of 2020 participants recently completed their DC experience from October 6-8. Included were opportunities to hear from Steve Barbato and Jenny Buelin (ITEEA), Geraldine Gooding and Tom Walker (ASEE), Beth Cady (NAE), and Patti Curtis (USDE). Meetings with these presenters took place at the National Center for Higher Education and the US Department of Education buildings. The group also had meetings with Julie Johnson and other program officers at the National Science Foundation, and spoke with a staff liaison for education in Senator David Perdue’s office. Time at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, a tour of the Capital, and visit to the Library of Congress rounded out the experience.

Online sessions will provide opportunities to hear from more leaders and innovators in the field during the months between now and the March conference. Concluding activities in Baltimore will provide culminating experiences and opportunity to recognize each person in this year’s class.
