Advanced Technological Applications:

Soft Robotics as an Innovation in STEM Learning

3:00-4:00pm ET

This hands-on session shares curriculum materials from our National Science Foundation funded research project, "Soft Robotics to Broaden the STEM Pipeline" that are now part of the Advanced Technology Applications EbD course. Specifically, this workshop will feature Unit 5 Robotics and we will engage in Learning Cycle 2: Soft Actuators. Learn about the motivation to bring soft robotics to the classroom and then how to successfully make a squishy robot to take these ideas to your own class! New this year, hear how the lessons went based on a teacher’s first-hand account.

Two experience options for participants:

Option 1 - Hands-on workshop style - The first 40 registrants prior to March 8 will have the option of receiving hands-on materials shipped to them prior to the workshop. Participants will be expected to provide scissors.
Option 2 - Presentation style - Participants without materials and those who prefer to see a presentation can still have the benefit of watching without actually designing and building.

Materials lists and fabrication instructions will be shared with all participants who want to implement this lesson in their classrooms.

Racing Through STEM: Design Thinking

with the Build Smart EV Micro-Kart Kit

1:00-5:00pm ET

Sponsored by STEM Education Works, The Racing Through STEM workshop will provide educators with a unique opportunity to design and build a working scale model go kart. Starting with the chassis design, teachers will utilize engineering tolerances and design and then discuss explicit connections to CAD programming and 3D printing. Following chassis completion, attendees will integrate the fundamental mechanical systems to power the kart and explore various gear ratios and the implications on torque and speed. Finally, attendees will use a microcontroller and breadboard to automate and control motor speed and further improve the functionality of their kart. All attendees will receive supplies to build their own fully functioning EV Micro-Kart, ideas for immediate classroom application, and access to the expanded curriculum (100s of related resources) from STEM Education Works.

$75 per registrant to cover the cost associated with mailing of micro-kart kits and access to online curriculum. Shipping to continent U.S. only. Must be registered by February 15 to receive micro-kart kit.

After February 15 registration is free but will not include the micro-kart kit, however the kit can be ordered at registrant's expense by contacting STEMEducationWorks.

Doing Elementary STEM Virtually
