Designing the Future through Engineering byDesign

Join the STEM Center for Teaching and Learning for a hands-on approach to Engineers Week through Engineering byDesign™. This STEMinar will highlight and provide design briefs to use within your class that ensure your learners are experiencing engaging engineering. These design briefs are highlights of content taken from three newly revised curricula through the Engineering byDesign 6E model™. 
Ryan S. Novitski, ITEEA's STEM CTL Director of Learning, is a graduate of Oswego university in Technology Education, McDaniel University in Educational Leadership, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He has served at the K-12 level as both a Technology and Engineering Educator and Vice Principal.
Mr. Novitski has been an active ITEEA advocate, including presenting at ITEEA conferences, as a National Teacher Effectiveness Coach, and as part of curriculum writing committees for ITEEA as well as for the AP College Board. 
Darcie Jones, ITEEA's STEM CTL Director of Innovation, is a graduate of the Technology Education Program at Millersville University of Pennsylvania where she was introduced to ITEEA and TEECA and, as a result, became a proponent of STEM Education. Darcie spent the last four years as a Lab Technology Teacher in the Northern Virginia area and one year as a School Test coordinator.
Ms Jones recently attended The George Washington University College of Professional Studies Program to continue her education in the area of STEM and received a Programming and Coding certificate.

An Introduction to the
Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning
Presenters: Jamie Gurganus, Amy Sabarre, and Greg Strimel
The Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning has been published as a practical guide for developing coherent, authentic, and equitable engineering learning initiatives/programs across schools. This guide includes a definition of the three-dimensions of engineering learning, principles for guiding pedagogical practice, and common learning goals toward achieving engineering literacy for all.
Accordingly, this ITEEA STEMinar will:
  • Provide a brief introduction to the contents of the framework.
  • Explore how the highlighted engineering concepts/pedagogical approaches compliment and support Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy to influence more immediate and purposeful instructional practice.
  • Examine ways in which how this framework has been used in high schools to provide increased relevance and rigor into the Career & Technical Education pathways.
  • Highlight instructional materials (i.e., engineering performance matrices and sample lesson plans) to teach engineering, with increased sophistication over time, within socially-relevant and culturally-situated contexts.
Dr. Jamie Gurganus is the undergraduate program coordinator and a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UMBC, Director for the Center for the innovative, teaching, research and learning and she is the Associate Director of Engineering Education Initiatives at COEIT. Her research is focused on solving problems relating to educating and developing engineers, teachers, and the community at all levels (k12, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate and faculty development). She seeks to identify best practices and develop assessment methods that assist faculty and teachers with student engagement, helping them to navigate the various pathways in STEM. A few of these key areas include engineering identity and mindsets, first-year experiences in engineering, integrating service learning into the engineering classroom, implementing new instructional methodologies, and design optimization using additive manufacturing. Dr. Gurganus collaborates with a number of industry partners and consults throughout Maryland in STEM education initiatives. In 2019, Dr. Gurganus received the Northern Maryland Technology Council Leader Award in STEM education. She has written curricula and published a number of works in engineering education, including a Statics workbook for undergraduate engineering students. She is the Director of Innovation Programs and Operations for the non-profit research collaborative, Advancing Engineering Excellence in P-12 Engineering Education. Dr. Gurganus teaches several first- and second-year Mechanical Engineering classes along with the Mechanical Engineering Senior Capstone design course for UMBC.
Amy Sabarre is the Director of K-12 STEM Education and K-5 Content Coordinator for Harrisonburg City Public Schools (VA). Amy is also the Director of Implementation and Professional Development with AEEE. Sabarre has been in Science/STEM education for 17 years and holds a Masters degree from Virginia Tech in Integrative STEM Education. In 2011 she began creating a vertical K-12 Integrative STEM education program in Harrisonburg and has continued to grow her school system's programs and commitment to STEM education. Sabarre also leads her school system's efforts in computer science, Project-Based Learning and Performance-Based Assessment. Amy is a strong advocate for STEM education for all. Most recently Sabarre was appointed to the Virginia Governor’s STEM Commission and took the lead on the Subcommittee for STEM Literacy. She has been active in establishing a Virginia STEM network since 2014. Sabarre has authored articles for NSTA and ITEEA and was a reviewer for the publication STEM Integration in K-12 Education: Status, Prospects, and an Agenda for Research.
Dr. Greg J. Strimel is an assistant professor of Technology Leadership & Innovation at Purdue University. Within this program, he educates pre-service engineering technology teachers on the processes of developing curriculum and creating/maintaining learning facilities. Additionally, he coordinates the Design & Innovation Minor program and serves as an advisor to the Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association (TEECA). Strimel’s scholarly efforts are focused on studying the connections between design thinking, design-based pedagogies, and design performance to better support the innovation capabilities of the next generation as well as investigating opportunities to improve connections between education and industry. Through these efforts, his mission is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to engage in high-quality engineering learning experiences.

How to Get Started with Creating a Creativity Lab/Makerspace Course

Does the idea of a makerspace course appeal to you and your district, but you aren’t sure where to start? It can be overwhelming to design activities that allow students to explore their various curiosities while maintaining a productive environment. Learn the basic framework of a successful creativity lab/makerspace class offering, as well as how developing creative thinking strategies, inspiration, and self-awareness in your students can be the guide that allows you to design learning experiences with intrinsic value, autonomy, and help students to develop a level of expertise. Discussions (Q&A), stories from experience, and simple strategies will be shared to help encourage this worthwhile mission!
Simone Gaunt has a degree in Environmental Studies and is a certified Grades K-8 teacher in the Design and Technology Department at the School District of the Chathams in Morris County, NJ. She spent 13 years teaching science and then 7 in the Design & Technology department writing curriculum, developing courses, and fostering students as they learn how to think creatively. Simone has designed a successful middle school course called Creativity & Design, which has become the district’s version of a makerspace course. She is the mother of two middle school-aged children and enjoys exploring all things creative in her spare time.
