Westlake, OH. — If you can, close your eyes and imagine our world without….clothes, cars, computers, and kitchen appliances; or bicycles, bridges, and backpacks; how about musical instruments, medical devices, or mobile phones; or The Westlake Rec Center, Crocker Park, or even the new elementary school.

Eli Lehrer, executive vice president and general manager for the History Channel, said of the recently aired Assembly Required TV series, “Our history is defined by the innovations of ordinary dreamers creating extraordinary things, from Thomas Edison’s light bulb to the Wright brothers’ first flight.”

In their Technology & Engineering classes, students have engaged in 2 of the 4 subjects of antiquity which includes architecture and engineering. The other 2 are law and medicine.

They’ve learned about problem solving, teamwork, determination, discipline, technological literacy, design and creativity.  Too bad those attributes aren’t part of the state report card!

The Technology & Engineering Department of Westlake High School held its first-ever T&E (Technology & Engineering) Signing Day assembly recently to recognize the graduating seniors as they pursue a post- secondary T&E major, and to celebrate the many talents, capabilities, aspirations, and accomplishments of these future architects, engineers, designers, inventors, makers, technicians, artisans and problem solvers.

After all, what would we have if not for the individuals that create, design, draw, produce, repair, and build the products, devices, buildings, innovations and inventions we use in our everyday lives that make things useful, safer, better, stronger, more practical, beautiful & enjoyable?

To start the celebration, four Westlake High School T&E alumni made an appearance to offer a few words of wisdom and encouragement to the graduates.  They included:

Nia Marinucci (class of 2007), a registered Architect and Urban Designer and founder and principal of The Architetta, a practice specializing in residential renovation and restoration.  She told them to keep their heads up and work hard because in the end it will be worth it, helping them to be successful in their careers and life in general.

Stephanie Hayden (class of 2008), a registered architect at Schill Architecture.  She encouraged the students to continue reaching for their goals in spite of the effort and time necessary to pursue excellence.

Jillian Eddy (class of 2018), who just completed her junior year at Kent State University majoring in Engineering Technology.  She reminded the students they have learned to become and work “OYO” (on your own), which will in turn help them when they are in college with higher expectations and responsibilities.

Ethan Simon (class of 2019), who just completed his sophomore year at Kent State University majoring in Architecture. He said that with the solid foundation they received in high school they can feel confident moving on to the next level, but not to become complacent where they should make small steps to get more productive and better each day.

The T&E Signing Day event was a chance to rally around the students who have committed to higher education especially in the design and engineering fields. Every student who commits to going to and completing college in a T&E field deserves to be celebrated just like a celebrity or star athlete. Whether at a community college, a university, a certification program, military or any other education past high school, T&E Signing Day shows support for this future. The event is a way for educators, counselors and parents to encourage those heading to college, while also being a way for students to inspire and encourage others.
