Passing: Former ITEEA President, George R. Willcox, DTE

April 04, 2022

RESTON, VA, April 4, 2022 - George R. Willcox, DTE, 69, departed this life March 30, 2022. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Willie Ann Willcox; and parents, George and Lucy Willcox. Surviving are his loving and devoted daughter, Angela Minor; two aunts, one uncle, a host of other relatives and friends.

George provided leadership and support for Technology and Engineering Education for 47 years before his retirement on December 31, 2021. He joined the Department of Education as the advisor for the Technology Student Association (TSA) in 1978 and served as a supervisor of the program of Technology and Engineering Education until his promotion in 2006. He was President of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) in 2003 and, most recently, served as State Director of Career, Technical, and Adult Education. It is difficult to encapsulate the range of impact he had on Technology and Engineering education, adding engineering courses in the mid 1990s. He was active not only in ITEEA and TSA but also in the Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association (VTEEA), Virginia Children's Engineering Council (VCEC), and the Virginia Association of Career and Technical Education (VACTE). His was a giant in the field and will be sorely missed.

ITEEA President, and longtime friend of George Willcox, Debra Shapiro, DTE, shared, "As a college student living in Iowa, I had the good fortune to meet George Willcox before moving to Virginia for my first teaching position. Just as I have heard from so many others in the past few days, he immediately took me under his wing to mentor me, and has been a guiding star throughout my career. He has been a tremendous supporter of Technology and Engineering Education, the Technology Student Association, and the people involved in both. He was a walking history book with a vast knowledge of our program area, and our professional and student organizations. He provided leadership and support to TSA, the Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association, and ITEEA. George will be greatly missed, but we can honor him by promoting our profession, and our students, in all that we do."

In addition to serving as ITEEA President from 2003-2004, Willcox was also presented with ITEEA's Meritorious Service Award and an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award from the Technology Student Association. He was a founding father of AIASA (now TSA) as well as on its first board of directors in 1978.
