Director, ITEEA STEM Center for Teaching and Learning

General Description
We are seeking a visionary, collaborative, and results-oriented educational leader to serve as ITEEA's Director of the STEM Center for Teaching and Learning™ (STEM CTL™). The Director provides strategic and operational leadership for Engineering byDesign™ (EbD™), ITEEA's standards-based curriculum initiative, as well as the organization's professional learning programs, grant-funded projects, state consortium network, and external partnerships.
This role requires an individual who can successfully balance long-term strategy with day-to-day execution. The Director will work closely with educators, schools, districts, universities, industry partners, state education agencies, and grant collaborators to expand access to high-quality technology, engineering, and STEM education nationwide.
The ideal candidate combines educational leadership experience with a willingness to remain actively engaged in program implementation. This is a hands-on leadership role that includes strategic planning, curriculum oversight, partnership development, grant management, and professional learning delivery. The Director will collaborate with a network of curriculum developers, coaches, researchers, consultants, and education partners to advance ITEEA's mission and expand the impact of Engineering byDesign™ nationwide.
This position may be primarily remote, with periodic travel, including occasional visits to ITEEA Headquarters in Reston, Virginia, professional conferences, partner meetings, and professional learning events. The position reports directly to the Executive Director/CEO.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
(1) Standards-Aligned Curriculum and Assessment: Leads and oversees the development and implementation of ITEEA’s Engineering byDesign™ (EbD™) curriculum in alignment with educational standards, specifically ITEEA’s Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy (STEL), including:
- Directs the development of new EbD™ courseware to meet industry and educational needs.
- Directs the review and revision of existing EbD™ courseware on a regular and sustainable schedule to ensure it is relevant and aligned with the latest educational standards.
- Delegates, leverages, and manages trained contractors in curriculum writing and revision projects.
- Supports existing EbD™ implementation sites while leading strategic growth and expansion efforts in targeted states and districts.
- Leads recruitment efforts to expand adoption of EbD™ among educators, schools, districts, and state partners.
(2) Professional Learning: Develops and coordinates valuable and sustainable professional learning programs related to technology, engineering, and STEM instructional practices and delivery of EbD™ courseware, including:
- Promotes and coordinates the delivery of contracted ITEEA in-person Workshops.
- Develops and maintains ITEEA’s on-demand professional learning programs, including Microbadging courses.
- Expands and diversifies professional learning offerings through sustainable, scalable delivery models that increase educator impact and program revenue.
- Develops and maintains partnerships with College(s)/University(s), enabling ITEEA to offer graduate credits for professional learning.
- Builds capacity in a diverse team of Teacher Effectiveness Coaches (TECs), growing the network as needed.
- Completes training to become a certified National Teacher Effectiveness Coach (NTEC), enabling the Director to personally deliver professional learning as needed.
(3) Research and Partnerships: Seeks mutually beneficial partnerships to advance ITEEA, the STEM CTL, EbD™, and the research body of technology and engineering education, including:
- Fulfills existing grant project responsibilities for ITEEA with three active projects: Exploring Computation Integrated into Technology and Engineering (ExCITE) II project, Computer Science through Engineering Design in New York (CSED-NY), and Microelectronics in Connecting Real-World Opportunities in Computer Science (MicroCS).
- Pursues new grant project opportunities relevant to ITEEA, STEM, and technology and engineering education and serves as a co-principal investigator (Co-PI) or consultant on newly awarded grants.
- Actively seeks out business and industry partnerships to support the overall growth of ITEEA, the STEM CTL, and EbD™ courseware.
(4) EbD State Consortium Management: Manages and supports ITEEA’s network of state consortiums to meet the needs of technology, engineering, and STEM educators in those states.
- Works with EbD State Consortium Directors to support educators’ needs in their states, including unique professional learning opportunities and standards alignments to state-adopted curriculum.
- Identifies key stakeholders in consortium states to help promote EbD.
- Meets regularly with EbD State Consortium Directors to establish and progress on unique state goals and keep Directors informed of consortium opportunities and ITEEA developments.
- Actively seeks opportunities to expand the EbD Consortium into new states.
(5) Miscellaneous/Other
- Develops an in-depth understanding of ITEEA’s Strategic Plan and contributes to advancing our overarching missions, visions, and goals.
- Contributes to the ITEEA Annual Conference, typically held in March or April.
- Develops, manages, and monitors the annual budgets for STEM CTL programs and grant-funded initiatives.
- Develops an in-depth understanding of ITEEA membership and supports the growth of membership, particularly within the EbD network.
- Executes special projects as assigned, such as the STEM School of Excellence recognition program.
- Liaises with ITEEA Committees, Task Forces, and Councils as assigned.
- Recruits, manages, and coordinates a network of curriculum writers, coaches, consultants, and other contracted personnel.
Requirements:
- 5+ years teaching experience in STEM required, preferably with a certification in technology and engineering education. Ideally includes experience as an educational leader at the school, district, state, higher education, or nonprofit level, with responsibility for curriculum development, instructional improvement, and/or professional learning.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships with educators, administrators, state agencies, universities, and external partners.
- Familiarity with ITEEA and the Engineering byDesign (EbD) curriculum strongly preferred.
- Experience managing complex educational projects, grants, budgets, and multiple stakeholder relationships.
- Demonstrated success in partnership development, program growth, and/or organizational development preferred.
- Communicates clearly and effectively in person, in writing, and via telephone/online meetings.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Has strong project and time management skills with the ability to work independently.
- Willing and able to travel multiple times throughout the year, including conferences and professional learning events.
Compensation:
Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. Estimated base salary range of $80,000 to 90,000, with an opportunity for incentive pay after the first six (6) months based on performance.
Additional benefits include retirement match of up to 5%, approximately 20 paid holidays/year (including the week between Christmas and New Years), and availability of health, dental, and vision insurance.
