ITEEA is saddened to share information about the passing of Mark Wallace, DTE. A colleague shared:
Mark embodied what it meant to be a technology and engineering educator, and never stopped advocating and fighting for our profession. His work at the local, state, and national level throughout his career forever changed the landscape of industrial arts and technology and engineering education. Mark served as the first executive director of NJTEEA for nine years, and has been recognized as a Distinguished Technology Educator by ITEEA, an NJTEEA Lifetime Achievement recipient, and has also been the recipient of: ITEEA and NJTEEA Teacher Excellence awards, NJTEEA’s Administrator Excellence award, NJTEEA’s 5 Star Program, NJTEEA’s Image award, and so much more.
After a successful 17 years teaching in the Vernon school district, Mark spent the second half of his career at High Point Regional High School, where he redefined what it meant to provide students with technology and engineering courses. There, he created classes that focused on developing student skills and understanding in areas that each student would be able to apply to the real world. He always worked to ensure that all students felt comfortable learning and discovering in his classroom, which eventually led to the creation of his Women in Engineering course - the first of its kind at the time. Mark was also an advocate for integrative STEM education (or “STEAM,” “we’re not art class” - Mark Wallace, on many occasions) and was always on the cutting edge of curriculum implementation as both a teacher and supervisor. Since retiring, Mark continued his passion by serving as a student teaching supervisor for The College of New Jersey’s Integrative STEM Education department, and as president of the Water Gap Woodturners group.
