CTE Programs in High School: Insights for Educators & School Leaders

High school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs equip students for future careers. These forward-looking programs provide students with in-demand skills and work-based learning experiences. Why is CTE Important in High School?

Implementing practical, career-connected learning in grades 9–12 adds value for schools and communities. For the students, well-designed career and technical education programs provide a crucial bridge from education to high-value employment in industries our world relies on. From classes focused on professions in construction or engineering to offsite career centers for aviation or research, these approaches impart durable skills and provide workforce experiences that build a competitive edge in jobs and higher education.

What Should CTE Programs Provide?

CTE experiences should offer a structured sequence of rigorous courses that surface a variety of professions. Pathways often begin in middle and high school. However, starting earlier has proven benefits. Evidence shows earlier exposure to STEM education leads fewer students to opt out of those fields. Ultimately, CTE should teach future-ready skills, build career confidence, and expand career knowledge.

District leaders can tap local businesses and state agencies to help ensure learning addresses local needs. Doing so adds value for students and communities, connecting education to the modern workforce and making experiences more accessible.

Adapting CTE programs to future careers ensures today’s students can succeed in tomorrow’s workplaces. Districts routinely update career pathways and classrooms with industry-standard tools and experiences to ensure local relevance. Across the country, schools are introducing artificial intelligencebiotechnology, and skilled trades courses to give the next generation must-have competencies.

The workforce will continue to change and school leaders must remain as adaptable as their students. By design, high school CTE experiences support economic growth and create pipelines for jobs students will need to fill in the future.
